Islamic group worried by lingering conflict
The Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the
Islamic Conference (OIC) has expressed disappointment with the
unresolved status of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh conflict. The statement was made at the group`s 11th
meeting held in Niger`s capital Niamey last week.
A document on the Garabagh problem adopted by participants called for an unconditional pullout of the Armenian armed forces from occupied Azerbaijani territories and honoring UN resolutions and other decisions passed by international organizations.
The group further called on the parliaments and governments of world countries to step up effort in facilitating a fair peace accord between Azerbaijan and Armenia on the basis of international law, and called on international organizations not to remain indifferent to the living standards of Azerbaijanis displaced by the armed conflict with Armenia in the early 1990s.
Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, head of the Azerbaijani delegation at the OIC Parliamentary Union, said the group calls on its members to sever any ties with Armenia.
The meeting participants labeled the Khojaly massacre perpetrated by Armenians against Azeris in 1992 as a crime against humanity.
On February 25-26, 1992, Armenian forces attacked unarmed civilians in Khojaly with the support of the Russian troops. 613 people were brutally killed, while 1,275 taken captives, 487 became handicapped and 150 remain missing.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been fruitless so far.
