Azeris going vegetarian

Azeris going vegetarian
Animal products have been gradually substituted by vegetable products in Azerbaijan in the past 25 years, suggesting that citizens are increasingly becoming vegetarians. Azerbaijanis gave preference to vegetables, including potatoes, greens as well as bread and macaroni, instead of meat, fish, eggs and other such foods between 1985 and 2006.
Thus, consumption of meat, fish and dairy products by many Azerbaijanis decreased in this period. Instead, people are consuming potatoes about four times more, while greens - three times, and basic pastry products are up some 30 per cent.
According to the figures from the State Statistics Committee and the UN Food Program, in 1985 each Azerbaijani consumed an average of 35 kilograms of meat, about 5 kilos of fish, 155 eggs, 28 kg of potatoes, 62 kg of greens, 158 kg of bread and macaroni, and 293 liters of milk. Per capita consumption of sugar and vegetable oil made up some 37 kg and three liters respectively. However, today the indicators constitute only 13 kg of meat, 120 eggs and 2.5 kg less of fish.
The figures represent a considerable decrease compared to the final years of the Soviet Union, which went down in history as "perestroika" (rebuilding). Thus, according to official figures, Azerbaijanis` daily consumption is currently only 60 grams of meat, 6 grams of fish, 263 grams of potatoes, 500 grams of greens or melons and the same volume of bread, as well as two glasses of milk and one egg every five days.
Meanwhile, the UN warned that the tendency of falling prices for foodstuffs in the world observed in the past 100 years is coming to an end. It says that these products may rise by 30% to 50% in the coming decades, which is definitely a troubling prospect for people spending 90% of their earnings on food.
