Chechens seeking Azeri citizenship
Chechen refugees living in Azerbaijan are seeking
citizenship, the leader of their community in the country, Ramazan
Mollayev, said.
"We came to Azerbaijan not as humanitarian refugees, but as political ones. We are now looking to receive the citizenship status," Mollayev told reporters on Tuesday.
Chechens come from the Russian republic of Chechnya where hostilities raged in the past.
Mollayev maintained that Chechens had come to the South Caucasus republic not as citizens of Russia, but as those of Chechnya. "We feel absolutely safe here and consider Azerbaijan our second homeland. However, we are trying to obtain citizenship so that we won`t face additional problems down the road…By becoming Azerbaijani citizens, we are ready to serve this country."
