Most convicted human traffickers in Azerbaijan are women: UN body
86 per cent of the individuals engaged in human trafficking in Azerbaijan are women. The proportion of females convicted for trafficking in persons is the highest in the world, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The same figure was reported in neighboring Georgia.
The UNODC`s Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, which covers 155 countries, says 79% of human trafficking victims are taken abroad for sexual exploitation, with most of the victims being women and girls.
It is also indicative that those actually carrying out the trafficking around the world are mostly women. For instance, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, 60% of the people convicted for these crimes are females.
The UNODC also estimated that 18% of the victims are used for forced labor, forced marriages as well as organ transplants.
It further said that since the UN adopted a special protocol on fighting human trafficking in 2004, 63% of the world`s countries have passed laws targeting this crime. In Azerbaijan, the police have been engaged in combating such crimes since 2005.
Of note, the report emphasized that the most Azerbaijanis who had fallen victim of human trafficking - 75 out of 187 - have returned home from Eastern Europe, according to the 2006 indicators. 42 Azerbaijanis have been taken for human trafficking in the Middle East, with 14 in south Asia, and 56 in other countries that were not specified.
Most of the victims identified in Eastern Europe were reportedly taken to Turkey. According to police records covering the period 2003 to 2008, Azerbaijanis held the fifth place for the number of human trafficking victims in this country. 69 Azerbaijanis were exploited for such purposes in Turkey.
