Special goal behind Obama campaigner`s visit
David Plouffe, former campaign manager for US
President Barack Obama, visited Azerbaijan on Monday.
Although the political expert was in Baku on a personal visit, he was expected to meet with President Ilham Aliyev and Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov. He also delivered a speech at the Western University. Journalists were not allowed to hear the address.
Plouffe declined to detail the gist of his dicussions with Azerbaijani leaders. "I am visiting as a rank-and-file citizen. I am talking about elections, the Internet and democracy. I am also lecturing on the way these elections, which had a mass turnout, were conducted."
Arastun Orujlu, head of the local East-West Research Center, charged that Plouffe`s visit served a specific goal. "It is impossible that the former head of Barack Obama`s election headquarters has come here all the way from America on a purely personal visit. He has a concrete mission."
Orujlu believes that Plouffe sought to evaluate the views of the Azerbaijani government and to convey them to Washington which, in turn, "will be the factors determining US-Azerbaijan relations."
Plouffe is considered one of the most well-known election campaigners in US history. Obama praised his efforts in an address to the nation after winning the recent election and called him one of the most charismatic election specialists America has ever seen.
