CE bureau`s decision on `political prisoners` confirmed
Samad Seyidov, head of the Azerbaijani delegation at
the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has
confirmed that the CE bureau has passed a decision on "political
prisoners" and recommended to the group`s Legal Affairs Committee
that a rapporteur for Azerbaijan be appointed.
Some media outlets have published reports to that end, but circles close to the CE have dismissed these reports.
Seyidov emphasized, however, that PACE has not yet appointed a special rapporteur on political prisoners.
"I don`t believe the CE will take this step. I am confident that the CE, which is marking its 60th anniversary this year, will refrain from making such a biased decision against our country. But if it does, it will mean that this organization has no respect either for its member states or itself and has no right to scrutinize human rights issues," he said.
Seyidov added that Azerbaijan would convey its strong stance on the matter to the CE.
