US-based paper misrepresents massacre victims
They demanded an explanation from the V Novom Svete (In New Light) newspaper after it misrepresented photos of the Khojaly victims. The paper editor claimed that the story had been written by an Armenian journalist who was allegedly unaware that the pictures showed Azerbaijanis who died during the carnage. He vowed to look into the matter in the coming days and to release a special statement afterwards. But Azerbaijanis were not content with the pledge and demanded a retraction from the reporter or firing him in case he fails to comply.
On February 25-26, 1992, Armenian forces viciously attacked unarmed civilians in the Khojaly district with the support of the Russian troops. 613 people were brutally killed, while 1,275 taken captives, 487 became handicapped and 150 went missing.
The photos were added to the article entitled "Armenian genocide is a fact" published by V Novom Svete in its October 19-25 issue. Its author, Armenian lobbyist Edward Pariantz, presented Azerbaijani children that succumbed to Armenian terror on that tragic day as victims of the so-called genocide of Armenians.
Armenians say Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people in the early 20th century, a claim strongly denied by the Turkic states.
Along with public organizations, the Azerbaijani representation in the United Nations is intensely watching the developments.
A writer and publicist living in the state of Florida, author of the "Forgotten Genocide" book, Felix Sertsvadze, said in a letter sent to Azerbaijan's state-run Azertag news agency that this was not the first time Pariantz came up with provocations of this kind. He wrote that after he voiced protest in 2005, this impudent Armenian journalist was dismissed from the post of deputy editor-in-chief of V Novom Svete, and was barred from publishing his materials on the newspaper pages for two years.
