Unique community to be built on Caspian island, company claims

4 February 2009 05:58 (UTC+04:00)
A one-of-a-kind, environmentally-friendly recreation and entertainment community will be built on an island in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, according to information that has not been confirmed by officials.
Only solar, wind and hydro-power will be used in the community, which will allow for the elimination of conventional sources of energy along with the pollution they cause, said officials of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which designed the project.
Oghuz Okan, executive director of the local Eurocity Holding, which will implement the project, told Radio Liberty that it is estimated at $6 billion. It is unknown, at this point, when construction operations will begin, he added.
However, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said it was unaware of the planned project. Abulfas Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism, also said he had never heard of the proposed project. Garayev told the same source that the creation of such a project using state budget funds was not planned. He added, however, that the government would develop tourism on Nargin Island.
BIG said the island covers 1 sq. km and the recreation community would be built throughout the entire island. It says that unlike some extravagant projects being implemented in the Middle East, this project has a particular focus on climate conditions, which inspires hope that it will pave the way for the creation of other environmentally-friendly projects in the future.
