Vatican official due in Baku
The Vatican's secretary of state Tarcisio Bertone is due to visit
Baku in March, the Azerbaijani ambassador to Switzerland and the
Vatican Elchin Amirbayov said.
The announcement was made after the envoy's recent meeting with Pope Benedict XVI, which took place as part of the annual reception of ambassadors accredited in the Vatican.
"During the brief meeting I extended to the Pope congratulations on New Year from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and stressed that bilateral relations were at the stage of development," Amirbayov said. "I also reminded him of the invitation made by the head of state to visit Azerbaijan. Benedict XVI, for his part, noted that Vatican's secretary of state would pay such a visit in March."
During the visit, Bertone is expected to meet with Azerbaijan's clerical leaders and attend the ceremony of opening a Catholic church in Baku.
The Vatican is the smallest independent state in the world and the residence of the spiritual leadership of the Roman Catholic Church.
