Ruling party exec unhappy with broadcasting regulator`s decision
An executive of Azerbaijan`s ruling party has come
out against the broadcasting regulator`s decision to air dubbed
Turkish sitcoms on local TV channels.
Since January 1, the National Television and Radio Council (NTRC) has allowed broadcasts of films and sitcoms only in Azeri. Following the decision, some TV channels reduced their broadcasts of Turkish sitcoms. Some public representatives and linguists have argued that the dubbing option was incorrect.
Siyavush Novruzov, deputy executive secretary of the New Azerbaijan Party, said the Azeri and Turkish languages are merely different dialects of the same tongue, which makes dubbing useless.
"It`s as if a film shot in Britain needs to be translated into American English if screened in the U.S.," Novruzov said.
The lawmaker said that the Azerbaijani people are Turkic-speaking, emphasizing that one of the colors on the national flag symbolizes Turkism.
"Moreover, President Heydar Aliyev has referred to Turkey and Azerbaijan as the same nation, and a single nation cannot have two different languages."
Novruzov said Turkish sitcoms are appropriate, in terms of their ethical standards and values, for people to watch with their family members and halting their broadcasts on national TV channels would be wrong.
