MP: Baku pursues independent policy
By Gunay Hasanova
The more the policy of Azerbaijan is independent and reflects the interests of people, the more pressure the country will face, so we must be ready for it.
Samad Seyidov, the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary relations, head of Azerbaijani delegation to PACE, said commenting on the pressure of some countries to Azerbaijan under the “veil of democracy”.
The MP stressed that the first factor is behind this pressure is the independence of Azerbaijan.
"One of the main tasks of the holding the [constitutional] referendum is linked precisely with happening and occurring in the world new threats and challenges, one of them particularly is the pressure on the country for pursuing an independent policy. We saw this in Europe, the Middle East, and more recently in Turkey. "
The September 26 referendum on amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan was rated very highly by international observers.
The voter turnout throughout the country stood at 69.7 percent or 3,671,707 people.
As many as 117 international observers – MPs from around 35 countries as well as observers from various international organizations, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) – had been accredited by Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) to observe the referendum.
PACE mission consisting of seven people will present its final report regarding the observation of the referendum within one or two months.
Final results of the nationwide vote will be announced until October 21.
