President sees no threats to homeland security
"I am confident that this will stay that way in the future," the commander-in-chief told the opening of the Training Center of the Special State Security Service on Tuesday.
He said both political and economic reforms as well as security issues were being addressed in the country based on an all-round approach.
"We should stand ready for all emerging challenges and ensure our security. The primary pre-condition for Azerbaijan's successful development and thriving life is our security.
"In the countries where these issues fail to find their solution or a threat to security or stability exists, economic development is impossible too," the head of state said.
Aliyev said the protection of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline and other conduits and transport infrastructure underpinned the country's economic and political security.
He emphasized that safe operation of pipelines has been ensured in Azerbaijan.
"I can say that for all these years, no incidents occurred in the Azerbaijani territory or any threats emerged during the construction and operation of pipelines. But we also know that in some cases, interference with pipelines, cases of theft, and, sometimes, terror acts, happen in other countries," Aliyev said.
The statement comes after Azerbaijani law enforcers detained a group of militant Islamists who were masterminding an armed attack on government agencies in Baku and missions of the countries represented in the international anti-terror coalition. US and British embassies in the Azerbaijani capital scaled back their operations on Monday over a potential security threat.
