Soldier convicted on high treason charges
An Azerbaijani soldier has been handed down a jail sentence on charges of high treason at the Military Court on Grave Crimes.
The court ruled that Vusal Heybatov had been sentenced to 11-years of imprisonment in a strict-regime detention facility.
The defendant had pleaded not guilty during the trial.
The closed-door proceedings on Heybatov`s case began in November 2008.
Heybatov was taken captive by Armenian troops near Azerbaijan`s frontline Aghdam district on April 11, 2008. He was transferred to the Azerbaijani side on May 3 of that year. After an investigation, he was charged with high treason and subsequently apprehended.
