Freedom House website `misplaces` Garabagh
International rights and democracy champion Freedom House has disappointed Azerbaijan with its separatist stance. Thus, the country`s territorial integrity was distorted in a map on democratic development posted on the group`s website.
The Map of Freedom, along with the three independent South Caucasus republics - Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia - cites Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh, an Azeri region currently under Armenian occupation, as well as Georgia`s rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Moreover, the map indicates in the parentheses following the titles of the separatist regimes which sovereign states these self-styled entities belong to. It included both Azerbaijan and Armenia in the parentheses after the word "Upper Garabagh", although it did say (Georgia) following the South Ossetia and Abkhazia titles, Dnestr (Moldova) and Chechnya (Russia).
Azerbaijan sees this is a contradiction to its national interests. This position is empowered by the fact that even Armenia has not recognized the independence of Upper Garabagh and does not consider the region its territory.
Upper Garabagh is an Azeri region occupied by Armenia since a 1994 cease-fire ended hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about a million Azeris out of their homes. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been fruitless so far.
