MPs offer to introduce electronic IDs
The identification documents used by Azerbaijani
citizens may be replaced, under a proposal made by a group of
lawmakers to introduce electronic IDs.
Fazil Mustafayev, one of the initiators, has told a local TV
channel that the measure was necessary as the age of people and
their family status can thus be immediately adjusted if changes
occur.
"With the increasing age of citizens, a change in their family
status, if they are newly married or divorced, or change their last
name, the issue of making changes in their IDs emerges. And, since
most citizens avoid having their documents corrected, this causes
problems afterwards. But if electronic IDs are introduced, it will
be possible to immediately make these changes through the computer
system."
Malahat Ibrahimgyzy, who has lately changed her last name, backed
the proposal.
"A great number of my counterparts wanted to
change their last names, but changed their mind to avoid problems
with changing their documents," she said.
Another MP who has changed her last name, Gultakin Hajibayli, also
spoke in favor of launching the system of electronic IDs. She noted
that altering the shape of the IDs would be in line with European
standards.
The Interior and Justice Ministries have replied to the proposal
that since both government agencies were merely executing
authorities, the issue should be first put on discussion in
parliament.
