Armenia's claim for separatist regime's participation in Karabakh talks aims to preserve status quo

It is very difficult to comment on statements that do not conform to the logic and are completely absurd, such as the latest statement by Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan, Spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Hikmat Hajiyev told Trend on June 12.

He was commenting on Kocharyan's provocative statement saying that Nagorno-Karabakh allegedly should participate in the negotiations on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Hajiyev noted that Azerbaijan has been negotiating directly with Armenia since the time of Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s presidency in Armenia. Regardless of whether or not someone was born in Karabakh, Azerbaijan was negotiating with the Armenian presidents, he stressed.

“Armenia’s claim for the participation of the separatist regime, created as a result of occupation and bloody ethnic cleansing, is aimed at paralyzing the negotiation process and preserving the status quo based on occupation and annexing the occupied territories of Azerbaijan,” the spokesman noted.

Armenia broke out a lengthy war against Azerbaijan by laying territorial claims on the country. Since a war in the early 1990s, Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities.

To this day, Armenia has not implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions.
