Armenian recon group attempts to violate Azerbaijan’s border [UPDATE]
By Rashid Shirinov
A reconnaissance group of the Armenian Armed Forces tried to violate the Azerbaijan-Armenia state border on Thursday morning.
The Armenian group found itself in the ambush of the Azerbaijani army while attempting to cross the borders, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported. “The enemy suffered losses in the ensuing clash and had to retreat,” said the ministry.
A soldier of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, Gurbanov Chingiz, is missing as a result of the shootout. The search for the soldier is underway.
“Apparently Armenia doesn’t need relative calmness at the front line and thus resorts to similar provocations,” the ministry said, emphasizing that if the enemy further continues these kind of actions, it will face heavy losses.
Overall, Armenia’s armed forces have 39 times violated the ceasefire along the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours.
The Armenian army constantly violates truce and targets soldiers, and even civilians ever since the ceasefire agreement was reached between the parties to the conflict that emerged as a result of Armenia’s aggressive policy towards Azerbaijan.
Despite Azerbaijan has urged the Armenian side to sit at the negotiations table, Yerevan has constantly refused to act in a sensible way.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
