Baku’s hosting a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship -- the 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe this summer is another proof of the city’s emergence as a major sporting destination in the world.

The capital city earlier hosted the first ever European Games 2015 and has been named as one of several host venues for UEFA Euro 2020.

Organizing the world’s prestigious events, Azerbaijan also expects to get huge profit, along gaining world fame as the sports and tourism destination.

Youth and Sport Minister Azad Rahimov said that profits from the sale of tickets for the European Grand Prix in Baku will be up to 4 million manats (about $2.4 million).

He said a total of 30,000 tickets have already gone on sale for the Baku Grand Prix scheduled for June 17-19.

“Tickets are available online from February 19. Tickets can also be purchased at the box offices,” he noted.

Rahimov added that there is no restriction on the sale of tickets. “Both citizens of Azerbaijan and foreigners can purchase any number of tickets,” he said.

Meanwhile, Baku City Circuit Operations Company has opened the first ticket-sale point for Formula 1 at the Park Bulvar shopping center.

The ticket outlet is located on the first floor of the shopping centre, near the main entrance and will operate everyday from 10am to 10pm. In addition, a few more ticket sales points are planned to open in the coming days.

A 20-40 percent discount on tickets is being offered to all Azerbaijani citizens and any foreign citizens residing in the country.

Commenting on the opening of the first ticket outlet, Baku City Circuit’s Commercial Director, Bulent Ozerdim said: “We opened the ticket outlet with the express aim of making ticket purchases much easier for Formula 1 fans in Baku. Local spectators can of course still continue to purchase some of the more limited range of special offer tickets via the official Baku City Circuit website. We are urging people to act fast and get their tickets as soon as they can as they may well be sold out very soon.”
