An extraordinary and legendary French film director and actor of Azerbaijani descent praised Azerbaijan's tolerance and women's active role in society.

"The President of the French Republic will probably know that synagogues, mosques, and Orthodox churches coexist side by side in the capital city of Baku without any problems," Robert Hossein said.

He made the remarks at the joint dinner of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, his wife Mehriban Aliyeva, and French President Francois Hollande in Baku on May 12.

Hossein is famous worldwide because of a series of films about the adventures of Angelica, in which he performs as Count de Jeoffrey de Peyrac.

The 87-year-old Hossein is in love with Azerbaijan's capital Baku, considering it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Devotion to Azerbaijani traditions runs in Hossein's family. His son, Pierre Hossein, plays Azerbaijani national musical instrument - tar.

Hossein said in comparison with other countries, women in both countries occupy an increasingly important place in society and are on an equal footing with men.

He voiced his pride for being Azerbaijan's son.

"I am overjoyed and proud to note that I am a son of this country. If I may say so, I personify the great friendship between our two countries, both of which are my motherlands," he said. "I was born in the beloved country of France, but at the same time, I am a son of the country which I envy - Azerbaijan."

Saying that his grandfather was born in Azerbaijan and his father in Samarkand, Hossein noted that while living in France, they made invaluable contributions to world culture and art.

He noted that their works are now shown on various stages, and this tradition continues today by his son, Pierre.

Meeting with the heads of state after the ceremony, Pierre Hossein played the Azerbaijani tar.
