A little piece of Greece in Baku

By Laman Ismayilova
Greek music will sound in Baku on January 22-23, Trend Life reported.
Famous Greek musicians will take the stage to perform some of the most beautiful rebetika songs for Baku audience.
Greek rebetiko or rebetika songs are the Greek urban laika songs that made their first appearance towards the end of the 19th century and developed to their mostly known form till the third decade of the 20th century.
The Rebetiko genre of Greek music was born at the harbors, where the Greek labour class used to live – Piraeus, Thessaloniki and Volos – and then moved to other urban centres. Rebetika combines the Greek music tradition of folk songs and kleftika songs sang by residents of large Greek cities.
Some of the greatest and most famous players and singers are Vassilis Tsitsanis, Markos Vamvakaris, Marika Ninou and Sotiria Bellou.
During the 1960s, the rebetika became unpopular again. Young people preferred the new rock music coming from the West and the oldest one started listening again to the candhades of the 1920s. But this music styles is back in the trends and many taverns propose rebetika music bands during week-ends.
