Film industry to enjoy certain privileges

Azerbaijan is one of the few countries in the world with a cinema history dating back to the 19th century.

However, for many years, Azerbaijan’s film industry lacked the necessary organization and support needed to compete internationally and it failed to meet international film industry standards.

Today, the Azerbaijani cinema has come to be an internationally recognized modern art enjoying a huge popularity and recognition at international film festivals, which frequently award the national films.

The government of Azerbaijan also backs the development of filmmaking as a significant cultural sector. In this context, some legal changes are expected soon to facilitate the cinema production in the country.

Under the amendments to the law “On customs tariff,” it is proposed to provide exemption from customs duties to film equipment and machinery, technological equipment and devices for cinema industry, which are imported in Azerbaijan.

The national filmmakers will be exempt from paying duties and taxes for above mentioned equipment for a period of three years starting from January 1, 2017. For this, they will have to present the confirming document of the relevant Executive Authority.

Another article proposed to the Tax Code reads that 50 percent of the profits gained from the production and sale of national movies will be also exempt from tax for three years from January 1, 2017.

These changes are recommended for consideration at the plenary session of the Parliament.

Moreover, Chairman of the Parliamentary Culture Committee Rafael Huseynov recently speaking about the bill “On cinematography” , said that the bill also provides special privileges.
