Major power plant launched
The Sangachal power plant, built in the Garadagh
district of Baku, was commissioned last Wednesday. President Ilham
Aliyev attended the opening ceremony.
Construction of the facility, which has a total capacity of some 300 MWt, had begun in February 2007. The operations were carried out by Finnish Wartsila, Swiss ABB, UAE`s Monolith, and Azerbaijan`s Azenko, Interenergy and Globus companies.
The power plant will play an important role in bolstering the energy security of Baku and the entire Absheron Peninsula, which are experiencing speedy economic growth. The facility will chiefly operate on gas and fuel oil. The main equipment to be used at the plant includes 18 generators, with a capacity of 17 MWt each.
