Azerenergy responds to Georgian rebels
Azerbaijan will not be involved in the privatization
of the Inguri hydro-power station in the unrecognized Georgian
republic of Abkhazia, Marlen Asgarov, vice-president of the
state-owned energy producer, Azerenergy, has said.
Abkhazia separatists are concerned over reports circulating about Azerbaijan`s alleged participation in the privatization process. Rezo Zantaria, the head of Abkhazia`s ChernomorEnergo company, has recently come out against Georgia`s plans to privatize the enterprise, claiming that the power plant is located "on the border" between Georgia and Abkhazia.
"The Azerbaijani side cannot be unaware of this. The main facilities of the power station are located in the Abkhaz territory, and only the dam is in Georgian territory," Zantaria maintained.
The Azerenergy vice-president said his company was aware that the Inguri power plant is located in a disputed area, therefore Azerbaijan will not bid for the plant, although it has already been put up for privatization.
The power plant was commissioned in 1978. The facility has been operating at only 50 per cent of its capacity in recent years due to the declared emergency condition. It is operated jointly by the Georgian and Abkhaz sides.
