TRACECA summit due in Baku
The tenth summit of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor (TRACECA) project will be held in Baku in 2008 with the participation of over 30 leaders, including heads of neighboring states. A relevant decision was passed at the sixth conference of the TRACECA intergovernmental commission in Astana, Kazakhstan on Thursday.
Despite several countries bidding to host the top-level gathering, the Azerbaijani capital was subsequently selected as a venue. The summit may be the year's main event in the country's political life.
Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia are participating in the TRACECA project. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt and Korea have expressed their willingness to join it as well. Moreover, 20 countries are interested in the project implementation.
Europe considers TRACECA a key transport corridor for the Caucasus region. The European Union is providing financial assistance to regional states under the project.
