By Aynur Jafarova
Azerbaijan and Serbia have significant opportunities to develop cooperation in the construction of infrastructure facilities, tourism, and education.
The remarks were made by Economy and Industry Minister Shahin Mustafayev on March 4 at the third meeting of intergovernmental commission on trade-economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Serbia.
Held in Belgrade, the meeting was co-chaired by Mustafayev and Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and Minister of Foreign & Domestic Commerce and Communications Rasim Lyaich.
Mustafayev said the Azerbaijani-Serbian relations, which are based on the principles of mutual respect and confidence, are rapidly developing.
"Azerbaijan and Serbia support each other in the international arena, particularly in important issues such as territorial integrity," the minister noted.
He also informed the event participants on the work conducted after the second meeting of the intergovernmental commission.
Mustafayev said several documents were signed in the legal sphere, and draft agreements on the protection and quarantine of plants, international cargo traffic, health care, and medicine are awaiting ratification.
"The sides are closely cooperating in the investment sphere. For example, we can note the successful implementation of the loan agreement for the construction of a highway with AzVirt, an Azerbaijani company, as the contractor. Cooperation was expanded in agriculture, transport, information and communications technologies, education, culture, sports and youth affairs, and humanitarian fields," Mustafayev stressed.
Mustafayev also underlined the role of the reciprocal visits of the two countries` presidents in strengthening political and economic ties.
Lyaich, in turn, said Serbia attached great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan.
At the end of the meeting, Azerbaijan and Serbia signed a protocol on the outcomes of the third meeting of the intergovernmental commission. Signed by Mustafayev and Lyaich, the protocol envisages the continuation of bilateral cooperation in various fields.
In Belgrade, the Azerbaijani delegation visited a monument for national leader Heydar Aliyev in Tasmajdan Park.
Mustafayev also met Serbian President Tomislav Nikolich to discuss the prospects of Azerbaijan-Serbia cooperation.
