Azerbaijani banker allays concerns after threat from Iranian hackers
By Nigar Orujova
The Azerbaijani banking sector is resistant to hacker attacks, General Director of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) Rashad Orujov has said, in remarks that follow recent threats by the Iranian White hat hackers group over planning a major hacker attack on the neighboring country's banking system.
"This is nonsense. To be on the safe side, following this statement, we instructed all banks to check whether there has been a threat or fact of such attacks. So far, we have received no information concerning any hacking attempts," Orujov said. He was speaking during the Fourth Future of Banking Summit organized by The Economist Conferences and sponsored by Azerbaijani PashaBank in Paris.
According to him, the central bank has requirements to banks in the field of information security and the related issues are under regulation.
Currently, 43 banks operate in Azerbaijan.
Earlier in February, Forensic Investigation Center's chief expert Natig Panahov said that Azerbaijan's financial sector is most at risk in cyberspace.
The problems in this area mainly relate to non-cash payment transactions carried out with the use of plastic cards. Another very topical issue is information theft, Panahov believes.
Panahov said that compared to other countries, the number of crimes in Azerbaijani cyberspace is not so large, but as the country's integration into the international community progresses, the problem will become more topical.
