ITU welcomes Azerbaijan’s involvement in addressing cybersecurity issues

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) welcomes the involvement of Azerbaijan in addressing the cybersecurity issues.

"I am very pleased with the real involvement of the countries like Azerbaijan in this arena," ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure told Trend news agency in Baku on Tuesday.

According to Toure, the cybersecurity is very important issue. "It is a global phenomenon, and it can be only resolved by global solutions," Toure said.

He stressed that he was very pleased with the fact that Azerbaijan's Communications and Information Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov has joined the International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (ITU-IMPACT Collaboration).

The decision to accept Abbasov as a member of IMPACT was taken within the exhibition - conference ITU Telecom World 2012, which took place in Dubai on Oct.14-18. IMPACT is the executive body of the United Nations specialized agency - ITU. Being the first in the world alliance against cyber threats, it brings together governments, academia and industry experts to build the capacity of the international community in the fight against cyber threats.

Toure said that adoption of the convention on cybersecurity will be the key issue of discussions during a major treaty-writing conference in Dubai, organized by ITU in December, 2012.

He stressed that the cybersecurity is a key issue that needs to have global agreement from all member states.

"We have to make sure that we have one legal framework that will criminalize crime in the cyber space," Toure said.

Talking about the development of the ICT field in Azerbaijan, Toure said that it is now the second growing industry in the economy of the country after the energy industry.
