Domestic prices soaring
Prices have risen 26 per cent in Azerbaijan in the past year, with food prices increasing the most, local Economic Research Center (ERC) estimated.
Food prices rose 35 per cent in April compared to the same month of last year.
The prices increased 13 per cent in January-April, with food prices rising 20 per cent. The increase was 3.12 per cent in April alone. The highest increase - 4.23 per cent - was registered on food.
Among foodstuffs, prices for bread and pastry increased the most - 16 per cent over a month, while the cost of the most widely consumed meat products and sugar rose 5 per cent.
In contrast, prices for greens decreased 19 per cent, while those for eggs - 68 per cent.
As for goods other than food, prices increased the most on construction materials - by 4 per cent. If prices continue to rise at the same pace, inflation will exceed 20 per cent by the year-end, the ERC experts warned.
But the State Statistics Committee disagreed with the figures, saying they were embellished. Annual inflation will not exceed 17 per cent, it said.
