Azerbaijan, Iran agree to build hydro-power plant

Azerbaijan and Iran have agreed on joint construction of a hydro-power plant in the borderline regions. The agreement was reached Wednesday at a meeting of a senior Azerbaijani official with the neighboring country’s deputy energy minister in Tehran, according to the Iranian cabinet of ministers’ website.

Khalaf Khalafov, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, told Mohammad Reza Attarzadeh that the Azerbaijani government was interested in signing an agreement with Iran on building and operating the Khudafarin dam on the Araz River, which crosses the two countries.

Attarzadeh, in turn, said Iran was seeking to boost its cooperation with Azerbaijan in all areas, particularly in the energy sector.
