Azerbaijan among countries with low poverty rate: UN agency

The UN food agency has included Azerbaijan in the list of countries with the lowest poverty level – below 5 percent.

The Food and Agriculture Organization made the conclusion based on the most recent available data on proper nutrition, covering the period 2005-2007.

FAO also said the world economic crisis has had little impact on Azerbaijan. Thus, the country’s real gross domestic product growth was 9 pct in 2009 and 5 pct in 2010.

It said economic growth has significantly reduced the poverty rate in the South Caucasus republic in the past 10 years – from 49 pct in 2001 to 11 pct in 2009 and 9 pct in 2010. However, a steady rise in food prices has affected the low-income 20 pct of the population that spends 60 pct of their earnings on food, FAO said.
