Baku among world’s 50 most expensive cities: study

BAKU – The Azerbaijani capital Baku ranks 48th among the world’s most expensive cities, a leading global consulting company has said.
Luanda, the Angolan capital, topped Mercer Human Resource Consulting company’s list. It is followed by Tokyo and N’djamena in Chad.
The Pakistani city of Karachi was rated as the cheapest city in the world.
Ranked below the Azerbaijani capital were such European cities as Istanbul, Frankfurt, Brussels, Berlin, Dublin, Prague, Madrid, Munich, Hamburg, Lisbon and Warsaw. In the United States, Los Angeles and Washington are less expensive than Baku, the report concluded.
The ranking of 214 cities was based on the prices for food and fuel, property rentals, transport fees, etc.
In mid-June, human resource firm ECA International said in its 2011 report that Baku remains one of the world’s most expensive cities, though it dropped to the 49th ranking this year compared to 2010 when it was in the top 30.
