US ambassador welcomes Azeri non-oil sector growth

BAKU – US ambassador in Baku Matthew Bryza has said he welcomes the development of Azerbaijan’s non-oil sector and the ongoing reforms in the field.

Bryza said that financial stability in Azerbaijan has made the country attractive for investments.

"Azerbaijan has successfully left behind the global financial crisis, and this certainly makes us happy," he told a business and investment conference held in the Azerbaijani capital by the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) on Friday.

The ambassador said further that during his numerous visits to the Azerbaijani regions he witnessed firsthand the government’s efforts to boost the country’s agriculture sector and provide support to local farmers.

"The agriculture sector, which is developing, could be one of the areas of investment," he said.

Bryza said another prospective field of the Azerbaijani economy was ICT, adding that Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov is due to visit Washington soon.

Bryza also stressed the potential for Azerbaijan’s turning into a major transport hub due to its unique location. "The expansion of airports and seaports will give an incentive to increasing these opportunities."

The ambassador said that the mentioned advantages are the drivers of non-oil sector growth and the U.S. is ready to support Azerbaijan in these efforts.
