Azerbaijan to buy two ferries from Croatia
BAKU – Azerbaijan’s state-run shipping company, Caspar, and the Croatian shipyard Uljanik have signed an agreement to manufacture two ferries for Azerbaijan. The ferries will be delivered to the country in October 2012.
The cost of building ferries for Azerbaijan is 22 million euros per vessel. The ferries have the capacity to hold up to 54 cars and can simultaneously transport several types of oil products.
Caspar head Aydin Bashirov, who co-signed the agreement with Uljanik Management President Anton Brajkovic, said it aims to fully avail of Azerbaijan’s transit potential and ship cargo transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway via the Caspian Sea.
The railway, which will link Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, is to be commissioned in the coming years, boosting cargo flow through the Eurasian transport corridor TRACECA.
Brajkovic said his cooperation with Azerbaijani seamen has been ongoing since 1984, adding that nine ferries built by his company in past years are used in Azerbaijan’s transport fleet to this day.
