WB plans debate on Azeri economic growth in Sept.

BAKU – The World Bank and Azerbaijan’s government plan to hold the second forum on the country’s long-term economic development in September, WB Country Manager Joseph Owen said Monday.

"The topic of the forum will be Azerbaijan’s economic growth and diversification," he said. "We intend to discuss a number of issues pertaining to higher education and the labor market, which are in need of reform."

Well-known experts and senior WB officials are due to attend the event.

During the first such forum, held in Baku in October 2009, participants agreed to follow-up with another forum to assess the fast-growing South Caucasus republic’s economic advances.

Azerbaijan has been a member of the World Bank since 1992. The WB currently finances 18 projects in Azerbaijan with a total portfolio of $2.2 billion. The projects cover transport, environmental protection, education, justice, and other fields.
