Azerbaijan rated 83rd on tourism competitiveness

BAKU – Azerbaijan ranks 83rd in the world on tourism competitiveness, according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) rating of 139 countries.

The ranking, released in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2011, is slightly below the one cited in the WEF’s previous report two years ago, which rated the country 76th.

The two other South Caucasus republics, Georgia and Armenia, ranked 73rd and 90th respectively this year.

Among Azerbaijan’s neighbors, Turkey was granted the highest spot, ranking 50th. Iran, Azerbaijan’s southern neighbor, was rated 114th.

The top ten included Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, the United States, Britain, Spain, Canada and Singapore.

The report said that the tourism industry is gradually recovering from the world economic crisis, with 5-6 percent growth posted in 2010.

The WEF’s report builds on such criteria as tourism legislation, environmental protection, aviation and overland transport infrastructure, and prices.
