Regional group seeks to lower roaming fees

BAKU – The Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications (RCC) is seeking to lower roaming fees charged by cellular operators in its member states, Azerbaijan’s communications minister has said.

Ali Abbasov told reporters that the issue was broadly discussed at a session of RCC officials in Baku.

"A working group is expected to be established and the issue is to be broadly mulled at the next meeting as well. As early as the first half of 2011, all subscribers will sense the outcome of these efforts."

Abbasov said roaming fees are currently regulated by the market, and the RCC will avail of its influence to bring them down.

"The RCC has a significant influence on cellular operators, and a council of international operators is operating under the union. We therefore believe that it will be possible to resolve roaming-related issues. All countries are taking this matter very seriously. We have made a decision to have proposals covering RCU member states made and for pressure to be applied to some extent on [cellular] operators in line with the law to bring roaming fees down."
