Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project will further strategic cooperation - Turkish Minister

BAKU – The opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway would create favorable conditions for further strengthening of strategic partnership between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, the visiting Turkish Transport Minister, Mr. Binali Yildirim said in Baku Tuesday.

Mr. Yildirim told the Coordinating Council of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project that the opening of this rail link would provide a way out of Asia to Europe via the Caucasus and Turkey.

Three countries have been cooperating so far within the two major energy projects: Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline.

Turkish Minister said that holding of the second meeting of the Coordinating Council is very important in terms of discussing the progress of the project and resolving the existing problems.

For his part, Azeri Transport Minister, Mr. Ziya Mammadov said that the work on the project is carried out on schedule.

Mentioning of the talks held earlier between Azerbaijan and Georgia on building a transport corridor between the two countries, Georgian minister of regional development and infrastructure, Mr. Ramaz Nikolashvili expressed his confidence that the agreements would ensure timely commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.
