Azerbaijan eyes investments in Pakistan
Azerbaijan is exploring investment opportunities in
Pakistan, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said during a visit to
Islamabad on Tuesday, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP)
reported.
Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan’s vast oil and gas resources have allowed the country to play an important role both in the development of the region and beyond.
During Mammadyarov’s meeting with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the parties discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to bilateral, regional and international issues. Baku and Islamabad agreed to continue supporting each other on key issues at multilateral forums.
Qureshi noted that while the political relationship between the two countries was very strong, economic and commercial relations notably lagged behind.
The current volume of bilateral trade - $11 million - is not commensurate with the political warmth that existed between the two countries, he added.
The two foreign ministers agreed that at the next session of the inter-governmental commission on economic cooperation, which is due in Baku this year, the sides would consider all aspects of bilateral relations and look into opportunities for cooperation in unconventional areas.
The Azerbaijani minister thanked the government and people of Pakistan for extending their firm and consistent support to Azerbaijan on the issue of its conflict with Armenia over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh.
He said that the people of Azerbaijan would never forget the fact that Pakistan was the second country, after Turkey, to recognize Azerbaijan following its independence 18 years ago.
Mammadyarov also said his country would support Pakistan’s bid for the United Nations Security Council for the term 2012-2013.
During his one-day visit, Mammadyarov also met with Pakistani Senate Chairman Farooq Naek. Naek underscored the need to promote parliamentary exchanges between Pakistan and Azerbaijan and said such visits would help promote better understanding between the two countries.*
