Azeri-Russian trade on upward trend
Azeri-Russian trade relations are developing although the South Caucasus republic no longer imports gas from its giant northern neighbor, the Russian trade representative in Azerbaijan Yuri Shedrin said.
Azerbaijan earlier turned down Russian gas supplies after Russian monopoly Gazprom more than doubled the price for its gas to $235 per 1,000 cubic meters.
Shedrin told a recent press conference that his country made investments worth $8 million in Azerbaijan in 2007, while the exports of Azeri goods to Russia rose 80%. The commodities mainly included fruits, vegetables and beverages. "Our key target is to bring bilateral trade turnover to $2 billion," he said.
Shedrin voiced hope that the application of the new "one window" system that aims to simplify business start-up and improve conditions for entrepreneurial activity would allow to boost bilateral trade.
