Illegal aliens ‘hold 30 percent’ of Azerbaijan’s labor market
Illegal foreign migrants account for 30 percent of Azerbaijan’s
labor market, says the head of an organization providing assistance
to the expatriate workforce.
Alovsat Aliyev, the head of the Center for Legal Assistance to
Migrants, told reporters that this is a major challenge considering
the high level of unemployment in the country.
Migrants mostly arrive in Azerbaijan from Georgia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China, and their number is
said to have exceeded 30,000.
Aliyev said companies arranging the arrival of foreign labor
migrants are failing to obtain official authorization for their
employment in the country, which requires paying a fee of 1,000
manats ($1,250). Evasion from this payment is resulting in
considerable loss of state budget funds. Failure to prevent the
unlawful hiring of expatriates is believed to be due to the broad
levers of influence of the heads of companies providing such
employment opportunities.*
