BP aiding business development in Azeri regions
A project aiming to enhance economic opportunities and skills
development in the communities in Azerbaijan’s Kurdamir, Ujar and
Agdash districts along the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) and South
Caucasus Pipelines (SCP) has been launched with oil giant BP’s
financial support.
The company and its co-venturers will contribute a grant totaling $326,155 to this project. In addition, communities will contribute $43,760 towards supporting the project, which will be implemented between October 2009 and April 2011.
The goal of the project is to create better environment for entrepreneurs to build sustainable business development and to support unemployed youth in finding employment opportunities in the three districts along the pipelines. To achieve this goal, the project will focus on three main objectives: enabling eight entities created by BP and co-venturers’ previous CIP projects to sustain, develop and integrate with the communities and the state programs; scaling up the youth apprenticeship program through enhancing marketable skills, employment and income generating opportunities for youth, and meeting the entities’ needs in finding specialized employees; and supporting the targeted entrepreneurs and entities in promoting their businesses by improving their access to loans and leasing.
The project will be implemented by the Umid Humanitarian and Social Support Center (HSSC), a national non-governmental organization established in 1997 which was selected to deliver the project.
