Azerbaijan’s budget spending on agriculture to rise
Azerbaijan’s state budget expenses on agriculture will slightly
increase in 2010, Agriculture Minister Ismat Abbasov has said.
Abbasov told a news conference Friday that spending on this sector will be 1% to 1.5% higher than in 2009, according to next year’s draft budget submitted to the Milli Majlis (parliament). The increase is due to a planned pay raise for scholars working in the field.
The minister said budgetary funds worth 10 million manats ($12.5 million) have been designated in 2010 for Agroleasing, a major local lender to the agriculture sector. So far, the company has received a total of 210.5m manats ($363m) of state funds.
According to Abbasov, Azerbaijan exported agricultural goods totaling about $204m in January-August 2009. Plant-growing accounted for $93.4m of the amount, while animal husbandry – for $10.5m. $100.2m was made up by processed agricultural goods.
The country’s imports of agricultural produce totaled $449.6m in this period.*
