New project aims to use solar energy in Azerbaijan
A pilot project aiming to utilize solar energy in Azerbaijan was discussed at the Ministry of Industry and Energy on Wednesday.
The project, which envisions illuminating the crossings between building floors, passages, entrances and courtyards in the capital Baku, while using this alternative source of energy, has been developed by the French energy giant Total.
30 solar batteries, each with the capacity of 0.1 KWt, will be installed on the roof of the residential building designated for the purpose by the Mayor’s Office. The batteries will be operating under temperatures of C -40 to 50 degrees.
The meeting participants decided to complete the project by the end of November.
A similar project is to be implemented in the town of Sumgayit, 30 km north of the capital. In 2010, the activities will be undertaken in several more Azerbaijani towns.
Azerbaijan has great potential for utilizing solar energy. The country surpasses a slew of countries for the number of sunny days during the year. Whereas there are 500-2,000 sunny hours in neighboring Russia, 2,500-3,000 hours in the United States and Central Asia, the figure is 2,400 to 3,200 hours in Azerbaijan. There are 1,500-2,000 KWt/hr of solar energy per square meter per year in the South Caucasus republic. This potential allows producing up to 20 percent of the electricity currently generated in the country.*
