Hackers robbing bank accounts nabbed

24 June 2009 15:47 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies have seized an organized group of local and foreign hackers intruding into bank databases to steal money from expatriates` accounts, says the National Security Ministry, which carried out the operation to detain the outlaws.
The transnational group - four Azerbaijani citizens, a Syrian, as well as foreigners living abroad who are currently being identified by investigators - have withdrawn money to the tune of 300,000 manats ($375,000) from the bank accounts of private individuals.
The hackers conspired with foreigners, who are not being named due to ongoing investigation, to establish the Nur-AB Limited Liability Company. Further, the foreign members of the group illegally acquired the numbers and codes of plastic cards held by the clients of banks in the United States, Canada, UAE, Germany, Sweden, etc. and then sent them to their accomplices in Azerbaijan. The latter, under the leadership of Azerbaijani citizen Elgan Valiyev, managed to transfer the mentioned amount to the Nur-AB LLC`s account using the company`s POS terminal, which was earmarked for credit card payments.
