Indian envoy says Azeri ties below potential
Azerbaijan has developed its relations with India
since gaining independence from the Soviet Union, but this
cooperation is unfortunately below potential, the Indian ambassador
in Baku has said.
Debnat Show told a press conference Tuesday that economic cooperation should be expanded.
India`s imports of crude from Azerbaijan currently account for a large share of bilateral trade.
"Our forefathers forged relations between the two countries centuries ago, surmounting a number of obstacles," the ambassador said. "As their descendants, our duty is to preserve and develop this cooperation."
Show pointed out that the global economic crisis has had a certain impact on the India-Azerbaijan trade in the first few months of 2009. However, given that the two countries have sensed the slowdown insignificantly compared to other states, trade turnover figures are bound to increase.
Show said referring to data of Azerbaijan`s State Statistics Committee that the South Caucasus republic imported goods worth $110 million from India and exported those worth $2.4 billion to this country in 2008.
Azerbaijan`s imports were made up chiefly by pharmaceuticals, frozen meat, textile products and clothing, tea, as well as some food industry equipment.
