Austrian tourism companies will not organize visits to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan – this is reflected in the protocol signed at the 9th session of the Azerbaijani-Austrian Joint Commission for Economic, Agricultural, Industrial, Technical and Technological Cooperation.

The meeting was held in Vienna under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan’s Transport, Communications and High Technologies Minister Ramin Guluzade and Deputy Federal Minister for Austria’s Digital and Economic Affairs Matthias Tschirf.

The document notes that the relationship building between the countries will take into account the fundamental norms and principles of international law, including respect for the principles of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. Individuals and legal entities will carry out their activities on this basis.

Illegal business, economic or other kind of activity in Nagorno-Karabakh and other regions of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia are illegal and the country takes necessary measures against those who are engaged in such activities. Moreover, unauthorized visits to the occupied Azerbaijani territories are also considered illegal and individuals who pay such visits are included in the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s list of undesirable persons.

It was noted at the meeting that despite the growth in the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Austria last year, this indicator does not correspond to the economic potential of the two countries.

The Austrian companies participating in the meeting expressed interest in expanding their activities in Azerbaijan, and it was decided to hold a business forum in Baku in May with the participation of both countries’ private sector representatives.

The meeting also hosted a presentation of Azerbaijan’s bid to host World Expo 2025.

Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Austria were established on February 20, 1992. The highest level of trade turnover between the two countries was registered in 2015, when it amounted to 525 million euros. The turnover mainly comprises oil products as well as agricultural, machine-building, and petrochemical products.
