Baku Steel Company to restart production
Azerbaijan`s largest steel foundry, the Baku Steel
Company, which suspended production due to a lack of raw materials,
will resume operation on April 20, the company`s newly-appointed
president, Axel Borowski, has said.
Borowski said the company`s metal procurement network would be expanded as the company buys scrap metal for 120 manats ($150) per ton. "Although the country has enough scrap metal to last for 10 years, procurement is not at the desired level. The shortage of metal prevents us from operating continuously," Borowski said and added that the steel mill might suspend operations again after 10 days.
He said that the main goal was to operate without interruption. To do this, the enterprise needs to receive about 1,000 tons of metal a day. A ton of re-bar produced by the company would be offered for 510 manats ($640), while the current capacities would allow production of 250,000 tons a year. To operate the enterprise to full capacity requires production of 350,000 tons of product per year.
Borowski also noted that state support was very important to operate the mill to full capacity.
