Europe stocks little changed on earnings, head for monthly gain

By Bloomberg

European stocks were little changed, after a three-day gain, amid mixed earnings results. They’re heading for their biggest monthly jump since February.

BNP Paribas SA climbed 3 percent as France’s largest bank swung to the highest quarterly profit in more than three years. Airbus Group SE rose 3.2 percent after posting an increase in earnings on higher deliveries of civil airliners. Spain’s CaixaBank SA dropped 2 percent after cutting its net interest income growth forecast for 2015.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Index slipped less than 0.1 percent to 396.06 at 10:18 a.m. in London. It has gained 3.9 percent in July, rebounding from a low as concern faded that Greece will leave the euro. Surging profit at companies including Deutsche Bank AG and PSA Peugeot Citroen and a flurry of deals announcements have pushed the Stoxx 600 up 0.4 percent this week.

“Investors are digesting the earnings and some days you can get good and bad news,” said Jacques Porta, a fund manager who helps oversee 500 million euros ($547 million) at Ofi Gestion Privee in Paris. “Overall the earnings season has been of a good quality. Some sectors are doing badly, such as commodity producers because the Chinese economy is weak, and the energy sector is declining. Soon it will be interesting to go there because they’re getting very cheap.”

Miners and energy producers dropped the most among Stoxx 600 industry groups on Friday as a rout in commodities continued. Vallourec SA lost 6.7 percent after the steelmaker said the rest of 2015 will be difficult.

Monthly Gain

The rebound in the Stoxx 600 this month sent the gauge up 16 percent for the year. The VStoxx Index, a measure tracking fear in the equity market, has plunged 39 percent in July, set for a record monthly slump.

The Stoxx 600 fluctuated after data showed the inflation rate for the euro area remained at 0.2 percent in July, matching economist forecasts.

Vinci SA added 2.5 percent as Europe’s biggest builder raised its earnings target for 2015. ArcelorMittal gained 1.6 percent after reporting profit that beat analysts’ estimates. ITV Plc climbed 1.8 percent after Liberty Global Plc increased its stake in the U.K. broadcaster to 9.9 percent.

Banco Popular SA dropped 3.4 percent after saying its net interest income was little changed from the previous quarter and down from a year earlier. InterContinental Hotels Group Plc fell 3.3 percent after saying it isn’t in merger talks with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. Volkswagen AG slid 1.5 percent after a Munich court ordered the carmaker to pay MAN SE minority shareholders 12 percent more than it offered two years ago, adding about 330 million euros to the cost of gaining full control of the German truckmaker.

Austrian shares began trading late because Vienna’s stock exchange had problems with its data distribution system.
