Hermes probes crocodile treatment after Birkin voices concern

Hermes International SCA said it will penalize any breach of its supply code after Jane Birkin voiced concern over crocodile slaughter processes.

The actress has asked Hermes to remove her name from the Birkin bag after an investigation into the slaughter of crocodiles by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, according to the group. PETA’s video showed crocodiles and alligators being skinned at sites in Texas and in Zimbabwe that it said are suppliers to the Paris-based company.

“I have asked Hermes Group to rename the Birkin until better practices responding to international norms can be implemented for the production of this bag,” Birkin said in a statement from PETA e-mailed Wednesday.

Birkin bags, the company’s most iconic product, account for about 15 percent of Hermes’s sales, according to Luca Solca, an analyst at Exane BNP Paribas in London. Hermes procures exotic hides in “strict compliance” with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, according to the company’s 2014 annual report.

Hermes said that it’s investigating the Texas farm, which it doesn’t own, and that crocodile skins it gets from that supplier aren’t used for Birkin bags.
