Most Indian stocks advance as motorcycle makers, reliance climb
By Bloomberg
Most Indian stocks rose, with the benchmark index holding gains near an 11-week high, as motorcycle makers advanced after an increase in monthly sales.
Hero MotoCorp Ltd. and Bajaj Auto Ltd. climbed at least 1.4 percent and were among the top gainers on the S&P BSE Sensex. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., India’s largest tractor maker, headed for a one-week high. Reliance Industries Ltd., owner of the world’s largest refining complex, was poised for its highest close in nine months.
About two shares rose for each that fell on the S&P BSE 100 index, which climbed 0.3 percent at 11:13 a.m. in Mumbai. The Sensex added 0.2 percent to 28,073.06, on course for its highest close since April 17. Investor focus shifted to the U.S. jobs report for June and a July 5 referendum in Greece, which could determine whether the European Central Bank pulls a financial lifeline keeping its economy on life support.
“My base case is that most likely Germany, France and the ECB, with added pressure from the rest of the world, will ensure Greece stays within the euro zone,” Navneet Munot, chief investment officer at SBI Funds Management, which has $12 billion in assets, said in an interview to Bloomberg TV India. “At the last minute, some solution will be found.”
Euro-area leaders signaled they won’t countenance bailout talks with Greece until after Sunday’s referendum. The U.S. payrolls data for June, which comes Thursday because markets in New York are shut for a holiday Friday, is projected to show a 233,000 increase in workers, following a 280,000 gain in May.
The Sensex has risen 2.1 percent this year and trades at 15.7 times projected 12-month earnings, compared with the five- year average of 14.4. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index is valued at a multiple of 11.8.
International investors sold a net $105 million of Indian stocks on June 29, paring this year’s inflows to $6.3 billion.
